*Family story re. Co. Kildare, Ireland: the first three children were born in an area of Ireland that was occupied by the British army at the time (Curragh, to be specific), so it was classified as part of Britain.  There is some concern that my Grandad may come leaping out of his grave at me leaving this point unclarified on the blog.   Here's what A.R. writes:

Your grandfather was always quite adamant that he was British and not Irish. He also had a dreadful job when he tried to get a passport, and many letters were sent back and forth before someone in charge looked up the history and he was believed. Coming home from Canada at one time, the customs and excise officer they had to go past, said " I see you were born in..... in 1908", and when G'dad said yes, he said, "and I bet you had a big problem getting a passport". It turned out that he had been born there too at around the same time, and had suffered the same problem.

So there it is.  Rest peacefully again dear Grandad.
