Adams

Last update: March 3rd, 2020

From left to right: George Adams (we think), Alice and Frank Greed, possibly Bill (William Pitt) Adams (listed as a postman on the 1911 census - is this a postman's uniform?), or Len Adams (also a postman according to the passenger listing on his way to Australia), and Doris and Isabel (Babs) are the two children.
Circa 1915, Bournemouth Beach

Starting with my Great-great grandfather, George Adams, and the multiple generations of Adams and Hydes who lived in and around Cranborne, here they are.

Generation 5 - George & Elizabeth Adams

George's first wife and children:

George Adams and Elizabeth (also Adams?) marry  [Absolutely cannot find any record of their marriage or her death, so there is a story here: did they divorce and Elizabeth remarry?  Did she end up in an asylum or something of that nature?  Were they never married and George reported her children as his on the baptismal records?  Their lives together were between censuses.   N.B.  There are no burial records surviving in the Cranborne church for 1876, which could have been when Elizabeth died, but there are also no national registry records that I can find either.]

     - Elizabeth Adams: baptized June 6, 1874.
                Buried June 9, 1874, aged 1 day.
     - Thomas Den(n)is Adams baptized July 4, 1875, Cranborne
     - William Pitt Adams baptized July 4, 1875, Cranborne;
               buried 21 November 1878, aged 3, St.Clement's Church

[Somewhere between 1875 and 1878, George and family move to Victoria Road, Boscombe.  Elizabeth Adams disappears from the records.]

  • 1841 Census: living on High St.
  • 1851 Census: living 97 Salisbury St.
  • 1861 Census: living 126 Water St. Cranborne.  The Cross Keys Inn is numbered as 129 Water St., which would make it across the street.  These large numbers cannot be what we call civic numbers, but were numbers assigned to their home by the census taker, as it was a relatively short street, even on an old map I checked, when it ran further out of town up the river.
  • 1871 Census: living on High St. again..[Why did they move around so much? They would soon all be off to Christchurch/Bournemouth after Thomas dies in1875.]

  1. Thankyou very much for sharing this information. Have you seen the court record for Cranborne Vs Thomas Hyde in respect of Martha Caish from Sept 1790?
