So we begin in the Rhondda Valley, a beautiful place now - I was last there in 2011 - and a beautiful place before coal was mined, according to what I've read.  By the time my grandmother was born and grew up, it was a blackened industrial place, and life was hard.  Her father worked as a carpenter for a coal mine and died when she was only 9 years old.
